Veterans Day 2021: what’s open, what’s closed and what events are happening

Every year on November 11, Americans honor all who have served in the military. Here’s a look at how communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington celebrate Federal Day, plus what’s free for veterans and what’s closed for the holiday.

OPENED CLOSED

Public transport: TriMet, MAX and WES buses; C-Trans; and the Portland Aerial Streetcar all run regularly on Thursday, November 11.

Federal agencies: Federal offices and courts will be closed.

State agencies: Offices and courts in the states of Oregon and Washington will be closed.

Cities and departments: Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington and Clark counties offices, Portland and Vancouver city offices, and the Metro regional center will be closed.

Portland parking meters: Free on Thursday, November 11.

Postal Mail (USPS) will not be delivered on Thursday 11 November and post offices will be closed.

More regional libraries are closed for holidays. Check with your branch.

Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs will honor all veterans of the United States Armed Forces on Wednesday in the statewide celebration of Veterans Day 2021. The event is reverting to an outdoor and in-person format for 2021 in accordance with public health guidelines. Federal, state and local dignitaries will make remarks. The event also includes a colored guard, the singing of the national anthem, the presentation of crowns and the game of “Taps.. “2:00 pm Wednesday, November 10, Oregon State Capitol Park, Court Street, NE, Salem. The event will be televised live on ODVA’s Facebook page.

University of Portland continues its more than 60-year tradition of displaying a 24-hour vigil at its Praying Hands / Broken Wall Memorial beginning Wednesday, November 10 and ending with a ceremony that includes the playing of “Taps” and guest speaker, Major -General (Retired) Christopher Owens, USMC. 11 am Thursday. The public is welcome to the closing ceremony. 11 am Thursday, November 11 at the University of Portland on the Campus East Quad – 5000 N. Willamette Blvd.

The 2021 Veterans Day Parade in Albany will take place in the form of an inverted parade. The vets and tanks will be housed by businesses and community groups and at the YMCA of Mid-Willamette Valley. The floats will be stationary and the public is welcome to drive or walk in front of stalls. This is the 70th year of the event. A map is available on the Visitors Association website; albanyvisitors.com/history/linn-county-veterans-memorial/ The parade will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 11. There will also be a memorial service and honorary salute from 11 a.m. to noon at Timber-Linn Memorial Park.

Veterans Day Ceremony in Fort Vancouver The 2021 Lough Legacy Veterans Parade hosted by Fort Vancouver has been canceled. Instead, the fort will join the Community Military Appreciation Committee and the Historic Trust for a Veterans Day ceremony. The event is outdoors, in tents. This year’s keynote speakers include U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler, Vancouver Police Chief Troy Price, Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle and retired 1st Sergeant. Michael Robertson. Dress for the weather. 11:00 am Thursday, November 11 at the Fort Vancouver Field Artillery Barracks, 600 Hatheway Road; free.

Canceled events:

The Ross Hollywood Chapel Veterans Day Parade has been canceled; www.veteransdaypdx.org

There will be no official event at Beaverton Veterans Memorial Park in Beaverton in 2021.

The Oregon Zoo will not be offering any special discounts or free days for veterans in 2021.

The Bend Veterans Day Parade has been canceled for 2021 due to fewer volunteers due to COVID, according to the parade’s Facebook page. “We can’t wait to resume in 2022.”

DISCOUNTS AND FREE DAYS

National parks are free on Veterans Day across the country. Gold Star families and U.S. Army veterans can enjoy free access to over 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks, wildlife refuges, and forests. See nps.gov for more details.

Social Punch Bowl will offer free entry to all active duty military and veterans until 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 11. Oregon Coast Aquarium (Newport) The Aquarium offers free admission to veterans on Thursday, November 11. Visiting veterans must present proof of service prior to entry, such as a military or VA ID card, or a state ID card showing military service / status. Aquarium Hours: 10 am to 5 pm daily, 2820 SE Ferry Slip Road, Newport; aquarium.org/visit/hours.
