Deal resulted in 10,000 open-access papers from German scholars, says new white paper
February 1, 2022 – Hoboken, NJ – Wiley, a global leader in research and education, announced the expansion of its historic open access partnership with Projekt DEAL, a national consortium representing more than 900 academic institutions in Germany.
The landmark agreement, which began in 2019, offers participating Projekt DEAL institutions the ability to access Wiley’s academic journals while allowing researchers from all eligible institutions to publish open access articles in Wiley’s journals. The partnership has enabled a significant increase in the volume and percentage of articles to be published in open access by researchers in Germany. Based on a recent white paperthe agreement fundamentally changed the way research is accessed and communicated in Germany:
-
In 2020, on average, 93% of authors from German institutions publishing in Wiley’s hybrid journal portfolio took advantage of the opportunity to distribute their articles under an open license, with adoption steadily increasing.
-
The growth of openly published articles in Wiley’s hybrid and fully open access journals has resulted in a total of more than 10,000 peer-reviewed research articles by German authors, immediately released and freely available in 2020.
-
Through this agreement, researchers from more than 500 German institutions also gained full access to Wiley’s portfolio of subscription-based journals, resulting in a 45% increase in their use of peer-reviewed research articles.
“The Open Access landscape has evolved significantly since we began this pioneering partnership with Projekt DEAL. Now that we are able to measure the impact of this agreement, we can see how transformative agreements are positive proof that open access thrives at scale,” said Liz Ferguson, Senior Vice President, Wiley Research Publishing. “We are extremely excited to extend this high-impact agreement and continue to support researchers across Germany.”
Additionally, Projekt DEAL and Wiley have collaborated on a number of initiatives to improve open research communications in Germany and beyond. These include the establishment of an advisory board to assess progress in implementing the agreement; launch of the open access journal Natural Sciences; the organization of a symposium on early career researchers with 300 participants; and support the experiences of authors and library teams through improved workflows and communication.
Since signing this agreement, Wiley has led the charge on transformative open access agreements. The more than 25 agreements signed to date support more than 1,300 institutions and provide open access to more than 40,000 articles per year.
