FAFSA opens October 1 – Important dates and free help with filing

0

The FAFSA® (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opens on Friday, October 1. The state of Texas requires students in their final year of high school complete the FAFSA to get a diploma. When a student files for FAFSA, they may become eligible for scholarships or grants (based on need and merit), work-study programs, or low-interest loans. Some of the most beneficial financial aid funds are first come, first served. Students are twice as likely to receive financial aid for college if they file the FAFSA early.

Before the FAFSA opens, there are a few things students and their parents / guardians can do to prepare.

The first step for the senior and their parent / guardian is to create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) identifier. The FSA identifier is an electronic signature, one for the student and another for the parent (or shared by both parents). There is a period of one to three days for processing the FSA ID, which is required to complete the FAFSA. Tip: When planning a post-secondary education, such as FAFSA, students should use a personal, non-school-related email address.

Collect your personal information and tax forms to make it easier to complete the FAFSA:

Student’s social security card
Student driving license
Student W-2 2019 Forms
2019 Federal Student Income Tax Return
Non-taxable student income in 2019
Student’s current bank statements (or online access to check balance)
